If you’re an actor who feels like you’re at a standstill, or if you just want to improve upon your current acting abilities, then maybe it is time to freshen up your skills! Even if you have gone to acting school before or have some experience the industry, it is easy to fall into a rut, and this can leave you feeling unenthusiastic about your craft. This will translate into your performances for casting directors, and it could even lead to you missing out on roles. Don’t let this happen to you! In this article, we will look at how you can become an even better actor than you already are.
TRY READING UP ON ACTING
Sometimes it helps to remove yourself from the physical aspect of acting and take a look at some of the theory behind it. You can refresh your memory of techniques you learned in acting school by reading up on them. Highlight and make notes about things you might want to work on, and take a look at corresponding exercises online. You could also read biographies about some of your favourite actors or read books about your favourite movies. It’s a really great way to immerse yourself in the world of acting in a different way, while also learning new nuggets of wisdom from some of the greats.
SPEND SOME TIME PEOPLE WATCHING
A lot of creative types can benefit from spending time observing the world, and actors are no different! There are so many interesting personalities out there, and performers can benefit from watching people to find some inspiration. Even spending time chatting with new people and hearing their unique stories can help you to expand your perspective of the world and pick up new ideas for your own characters. You never know what great connections you’ll make doing this!
WATCH MORE MOVIES AND TV SHOWS
Do you have some favourite actors who you admire and wish you could be like? Taking a look at their filmographies and then spending some spare time watching them in their best roles is a great way to observe what they do. Make sure to analyze parts of their performances so you can learn what makes them so good at what they do. It’s a really helpful learning experience, and it can be a nice way to kick back and relax at the end of the day!
TRY SOMETHING NEW IN THE INDUSTRY
If you’ve already learned all about musical theatre or on camera acting, why not try something different and add some new skills to your repertoire? Consider taking an improv class or learning more about voice over work. Trying something that’s totally different from what you have experience in helps you step out of your comfort zone and can totally rejuvenate your passion for your work.
Becoming an even better actor takes some extra time and work, but it can be fun to improve your skills and learn new things. It’s also a great way to help advance your career even further if it starts to feel stale or gets to a place where you aren’t experiencing as much success as you’d like to be. We hope you enjoyed these tips, and we wish you luck in incorporating them into your practice!
